Mentorship

A chance to unlock potential

Our Nyasanda mentorship in Ugunja was founded in 2014 by six Kenyan teachers, supporting underprivileged and vulnerable children in education, health, wellbeing and integration in society.

A chance to unlock potential

How it works

During each school holiday - typically three times a year - students attend the Nyasanda mentorship, where academic revision now sits alongside Aflatoun's life-skills and financial education modules. The programme combines remedial teaching, study skills training, and education on food and health, giving a holistic approach to student development.

Students are fed during the programme. Every child who attends is served a meal each day of the camp. A reliable meal keeps students energised and able to concentrate, gives them a reason to stay for the full day of sessions, and removes hunger as a reason to stay away at all. Well-fed children attend more regularly, take in more of what is taught, and come back for the next camp.

There is a big need for the centre: participation has grown spectacularly ever since it began, and nearby communities have shown interest in starting a similar programme.

When students are given the right support, they don’t just pass - they excel. They grow in confidence, think differently, and start believing in themselves. That’s the real goal.

Remedial teaching

Extra support in the subjects students find hardest, taught by experienced educators.

Study skills

Practical techniques that help students learn independently once the camp ends.

Food & health

Students are served a meal every day of the camp, alongside guidance on nutrition and wellbeing so they can focus, stay healthy and learn on a full stomach.

Social & financial education (Aflatoun)

Through our partnership with Aflatoun, students follow a globally recognized social and financial curriculum - learning child rights, financial literacy, savings, and social enterprise to build self-reliance.
